This book was recommended to me by a coworker, and I’m so glad she did. Caroline Jayne Church is both the author and illustrator of Digby Takes Charge, and while I do enjoy the story, I love her artwork. The illustrations are colorful, with clean lines and enough texture and detail to keep things interesting. I would recommend any of her picture books for use in story time, but I think this one is my favorite. Digby is a sheepdog, and new to the farm. Digby is an excellent sheepdog, and all he has to do is corral six sheep into their pen. Unfortunately, the sheep don’t like being ordered around. Digby tries everything he can think of to get those sheep moving, a backhoe, a tank, even a helicopter, but they refuse to budge. It isn’t until he takes the advice of some of the other farm animals that Digby is able to coerce the sheep into the pen. I won’t tell you what finally motivates the sheep, but this is a sweet story with a simple moral and a bit of humor that children are sure to enjoy. I’d also recommend you check out Church’s Ping Pong Pig and One Smart Goose, as well as the variety of titles she has illustrated for other authors.
