This is a deeply funny picture book and I do mean deeply funny. Peggy Rathmann has managed to squeeze fun into every square inch of the page. The tricks start even before the title page with a deceptively simple illustration of a hamster that appears to be posting an advertisement on the web inviting hamsters to “Take the 10-Minute Bedtime Tour.” Before we know it, the hamster’s wheel has spun out of his cage, and, with the help of his owner, he is setting up a wheel-powered tour bus! The story begins as a father, oblivious to the tour going on behind his very back, counts down the 10 minutes to his son’s bedtime. Hamsters arrive at 1 Hopping Place and are treated to a snack in the kitchen, a goodnight story, and boating in the bathtub all before bedtime! For younger children, this book will be a simple lesson on counting down from ten with some cute pictures thrown in. Older children will pore over the pages to discover all the jokes that Ms. Rathmann has cleverly planted there. After you read the book, take note of the end pages, front and back. Both are covered with what appear to be candid photos. Closer examination of the story should reveal exactly where the photos have come from. It is neat tricks like this that will have children coming back for more. Familiar characters from other Rathman books are hidden throughout the book. From hamster-shaped topiary to slippers with personality, Peggy Rathmann pulls out all the stops in the humor-filled 10 Minutes till Bedtime.
