The best part of the Summer Reading Program for me is the enthusiastic book reviews we receive from our child readers. This book was introduced to me by Delaney and her mother early in August. They laughed as they remembered the fun they had when they read this book together, over and over. So thank you Delaney!
The Big Brown Rooster is tired of chicken feed. He wants something new to eat. Then he remembers the family legend about his great-grandmother, the Little Red Hen. He finds her cookbook, “The Joy of Cooking Alone by L.R. Hen,” and decides to make the strawberry shortcake. None of the farm animals want to help but Turtle, Iguana, and Potbellied Pig offer. “I can read recipes!” said Turtle. “I can get stuff!” said Iguana. “I can taste!” said Pig. “I’m an expert at tasting.”
As you can imagine with helpers like Turtle, Iguana, and Potbellied Pig, there are many slips and errors along the way. This is a laugh-out loud joy-fest. The pictures reward a second look as you find details that you missed the first time through the book. In addition, sidebars give factual information on the cooking and baking processes. And, of course, the recipe for Great-Granny’s Magnificent Strawberry Shortcake is at the end of the book.
This book will be best with an audience that understands that flour and flower sound alike but are two very different things. They will appreciate Iguana’s difficulty with the ingredient list.
