Mostly Monsterly is the story of Bernadette, a little monster who has a deep, dark secret – she’s a little too sweet. Unlike her monster classmates, who lurch, roar and demolish cities, Bernadette likes to pick flowers, give hugs and pet kittens. She is disgusted by her friends’ behavior, and seeks to introduce a bit of nicety and civilization into their world, while still allowing everyone to be true to themselves. Bernadette’s method of bringing everyone together is sweet yet sufficiently icky, and is sure to elicit both “awwws” and “ewwws” from readers of all ages.
Scott Magoon’s illustrations are fun and colorful and work well with the story. My favorite is his drawing of Bernadette showing her displeasure by handing a classmate a handwritten note that says “Grrr!” instead of actually saying it. So cute and true to her personality! This book is great for sharing with preschoolers and elementary school kids aged 4-7.
