One of my favorite author/illustrators is Helen Oxenbury. I am always on the lookout for anything new from her. In King Jack and the Dragon, three friends, Jack, Zack, and Caspar, spend the day building a fort and using their imagination to fight dragons and beasts. One by one, the friends are taken away by giants, until only Jack is left. Jack tries to put on a brave face, thinking that he will be able to fight the dragons alone. But even he is not immune to the sounds of the night and the wild ramblings of his imagination. Something is coming to get him! Can you guess what it is? Children will delight in Helen Oxenbury’s expressive illustrations, which alternate from simple sketches in black and white to those in soft, muted colors and the great rhyming text. This is a great story for sharing. Sure to be a family favorite.
