Have you ever woken up with a hankering for pie? That is what happened to Ol’Bear – but, he didn’t want just any pie he wanted Ugly Pie! Granpa Grizzle offers him some pleasin’ pumpkin pie when he saunters past but bear wants nothing but Ugly Pie and goes on his jaunty, rhythmic way. The story resonates with a southern vernacular – Ma Hickory was making her “righteous rhubarb pie,” but Ol’ Bear is waiting to taste Ugly Pie or nothing! Ol’ Bear makes his own Ugly Pie with a mixture of ingredients including
sour green apples, wrinkled red raisins, bumpy brown walnuts, and sweet molasses. He shares this pie with his neighbors who chant,
“We’re so glad that we could try
Ol’ Bear’s scrumptious-
Truly wondrous-beautiful Ugly Pie!
WA-HOO!”
This is a good fall book to share with Kindergarten and up. There are many interactive moments. If you are domestically inclined, the recipe for Ugly Pie is at the end of the book.
