Who knew that even a crocodile can have an identity crisis? A rather strange looking duckling hatches out of an egg that accidentally rolled into a duck’s nest. Guji Guji is his name and he truly believes that he is a duck. When some nasty crocodiles appear and plan to eat the duck family, Guji Guji must decide where his loyalties lie. The crocodiles patiently explain to Guji Guji that he is most definitely not a duck. They say that his “big, sharp claws help hold fat, delicious ducks tightly” and his “pointed teeth are necessary to chew fat, delicious ducks.” They maintain that crocodiles help each other and they insist that he help them eat the ducks. After pondering exactly what creature he truly is, Guji Guji comes up with a plan. This story of acceptance concludes with Guji Guji being a happy “crocoduck.” Be sure to look closely at the shadows and reflections in this charming tale, which is one of my all time favorite read alouds.
