Carmelita and her mama walk through their neighborhood on the way to visit Abuela (Grandma) Rosa. Their pet dog named Manny accompanies them. Along the way the family meets and greets friends and neighbors in a variety of languages. Manny says hello also but it always comes out as “woof.” When Carmelita and Mama find Abuela Rosa near the park, they hug and share warm “holas.”
Brightly colored collages illustrate the various street scenes as the family travels their neighborhood. The rich diversity of American urban areas is highlighted by the clothing and architecture featured in the pictures. A pronunciation and language guide to the various hellos completes the book.
