The simple, repetitive story follows Turkey in a mad dash for safety, with the farmer hot on his heels. As the turkey tries to hide among the pigs, then the ducks and the horses, children get to repeat the line, “Run, Turkey, run!” The family ends up eating grilled cheese sandwiches on the big day, but our hero isn’t out of the woods yet. Christmas dinner is right around the corner.
Rader’s illustrations are colorful and filled with wonderful details, such as the turkey wearing a scuba mask when he tries to hide among the ducks, and the farmer barreling across the barnyard with one foot stuck in a bucket. The story is suitable for preschool through the early primary grades.
