Ping Pong Pig is something of a black sheep on Apple Tree Farm. While Digby rounds up the sheep and the geese go about their work, Ping Pong spends his days trying to fly. It would be bad enough if Ping Pong simply did not pull his weight around the farm, but matters are worse because his attempts at flight tend to make a mess of things. The other animals have a secret meeting and decide on a course of action. They make a trampoline for Ping Pong. They tell him he can use it to his heart’s content as long as he will, “take it to a quiet corner of the field and let us get on with our work.” That suits Ping Pong just fine, until he stops to think things through. Maybe he should use his new gift for a higher purpose and repair all the damage he’s caused. Ping Pong’s change of heart doesn’t mean he’s given up on his dream of flight, however!
Caroline Jayne Church has some of the best picture book illustrations I’ve seen. Her series of books about the animals on Apple Tree Farm are perfect for large storytime groups.
