Away from Home opens up a whole new world to children… our world. The book explores the cities of the world by way of a school play. The illustrations show a play commencing where each scene is about a short, alliterative sentence describing a boy, an activity, and a certain city. It is fun way for children to learn geography and a little about different nations’ cities and cultures. The illustrations are simple, but they also depict significant locations and landmarks in each of the cities. What is also special about this book is that the author included a little bit of information on each city and its illustration. I would recommend this book to 4-6 year olds, especially those who are learning how big and diverse the world is. Since it is not too long or too short, I believe this book would do well being read to a group of children.
Anita Lobel is world traveler many times over and wrote this book to show children all the different places that are away from home.
