Just imagine that you are Duck. A “pshh pshh” sound from under your bed wakes you. What do you do? Duck was afraid to look so she ran for help. She yells to Pig that something under the bed is going “pshh pshh grrr”! And so starts a chain of animals who add their own fearful sound to the “pshh pshh.” Finally, Owl tells the animals that a monster must be under Duck’s bed because no friendly thing could make so many awful sounds. “So the animals set about gathering rope and nets and useful pokey things.”
The illustrations take advantage of the large double-page spreads. They show a parade of animals marching back to Duck’s house to help their friend defeat the “monster.” What do you think they found? Read The Great Monster Hunt to discover the truth.
This is a great story time book for pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten groups. Encourage them to suggest a cause for the “pshh” noise. You might even get them to join you in the ever longer “monster” sound.
