I have never enjoyed circuses. I do, however, enjoy Ian Falconer’s Olivia series and was really charmed by Olivia Saves the Circus, the second book in the series.
In Olivia Saves the Circus, Olivia regales her class with a story about what she did while she was on vacation. For their vacation, Olivia’s mother took Olivia and her younger brother, Ian, to the circus; however, when they arrived at the circus they discovered that all the circus personnel are sick and unable to perform. Fortunately, Olivia, a pig of many talents, saved the day by filling in for the ailing performers. She rode the elephants; acted as the lion tamer; and juggled. She even filled in for the tattooed lady and the clown.
Falconer’s story and illustrations are so delightful you can’t help but share Olivia’s enthusiasm for the circus and performing, especially when she becomes the “Queen of the Trampoline.” Although I probably won’t be going to a circus in the near future, I find them a bit more enjoyable thanks to Olivia Saves the Circus.
