I Will Not Read This Book is an entertaining story that elicits astonishment and suspense in young readers as they follow a boy’s ardent refusal to read a book at bedtime.
The little boy of the story announces he will read a book but first he must take care of some things such as, flossing his teeth, feeding his fish, and, my favorite, cleaning under his bed.
Eventually his flimsy excuses for not reading a book run out and the boy suddenly announces he will not read today. Instead the real reasons for not wanting to read comes to the surface as he exclaims that reading is hard, he can’t read fast, there are words he doesn’t know and, oh yeah, “You Can’t Make Me.”
From here the story turns to the boy’s determination to not read. He proposes a series of outlandish circumstances as proof that he will not be dissuaded.
“I will not read this book even if you hang me upside down, by one toe, over a cliff…while tickling my feet.”
The story builds on these events until it can’t get anymore outlandish and things settle into calmness and resolution as the boy changes his mind and agrees, with a little help, from mom, to read.
This was truly a fun story. It held the attention of the children I read it to so much so that the only sounds heard from the group were the frequent gasps as the pages turned to reveal another horrific situation.
I read I Will Not Read This Book to a group of children 4 to 10 years in age and found it well suited for all of them.
